Having the proper amount of insulation in your attic can help you keep a comfortable temperature all through your home. In addition, having quality insulation saves money on your energy bills and prevents ice dams in the winter. Your attic should have a certain level of insulation in it, and that amount depends on where you live. The insulation levels of an attic are recognized through the R-Value. The R-Value is the value that is resistant to heat flow.
If you think that your home is under-insulated, you can conduct an easy insulation inspection.
How to Inspect Your Attic:
- Get a flashlight, note pad, and a measuring tape
- Go into your attic
- Check the type of insulation you have
- Try to calculate the current level of the insulation
- Check out the condition
- Check for poor ventilation
- Look for rodents and pests
- Check the moisture level
Ontario Building Code For Insulation
In 2019, The Ontario Building Code Ontario was changed for attic insulation. They changed the recommended R-Value from R50 to R60. They made these changes to increase the energy efficiency of the home and to save energy. Ontario is considered Zone 1 and Zone 2, and the recommended R-Value is between R60 to R80. The Department of Energy says that the R-Values for Loose-fill Cellulose is 3.1 - 3.8 per inch.
To help you understand the recommended R-Values for attics, see below:
R-50: Basic Insulation, between 15 and 19 inches
R-60: Good Insulation, between 19 and 22 inches.
R-70: Better Insulation, between 22 and 25 inches.
R-80: Best Insulation, between 25 and 28 inches.
How to Calculate The Amount Needed
Once you figure out your desired R-value, next, you can determine how many bags of insulation that you will require by using the following calculation:
Square Footage of Area to Be Insulated ÷ Coverage Area Provided per Bag = Bags Needed
You will also have to consider the settling factor. Again, check the cellulose bag for details.
